New Law as good as the Old? PDF Print E-mail
After almost a hundred years of its promulgation in 1909, an Ottoman Law on establishing associations was found more favorable to CSO's by 38 participants representing them, than a new law they fear would be more restrictive.  Paradoxically, this is gist of the first recommendation made at the closing session of a dialogue workshop held earlier this year in Beirut on reforming the law of CSO's.

The workshop was held by ACRLI  and the Friedrich Naumann, and was attended by 38 participants representing NGOs, political parties, labour unions, academics and journalists.  
In the opening session, Dr Sasin Assaf introduced ACRLI, and Mrs Ubab Murad , Project manager, briefly introduced the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and the objectives and phases of the EU project on freedom of association.  Dr. Isam Sulaiman presented the workshop and its methodology, objectives and topics covered.

Can democracy take off the ground without CSO's involvement in its inner workings, especially in provincial communities?  This might seem a rhetorical question for a man or a woman who knows the ABC of democratic ethos.  Yet, this was seriously the focus of a conference co-organized by the Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation and held on March 24, 2008 at the Shepherd Hotel, Cairo, under the title of "The Egyptian Organization Campaign for Amending Law No.84/2002".

Civil Society Organizations in the Egyptian Governorates Call for a New Law PDF Print E-mail

The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation held on Monday 24/3/2008, Shepherd Hotel, Cairo, conference entitled, “The Egyptian Organization Campaign for the Freedom of NGOs and for Amending Law No.84/2002”. Participants in the conference were civil society representatives, human rights activists and professors of universities, all of whom called for drafting a new bill for civil associations and NGOs.
